Frenzal Rhomb – Shut Your Mouth – Review

Frenzal Rhomb

Shut Your Mouth (Fat )
by Vinnie Apicella

Shut your mouth and open your eyes… Well, not exactly, but it just fits. Frenzal Rhomb is what I consider Juvenile Punk music, not quite coming-of-age, but played with a goofy sincerity. Tunes like “Everything’s Fucked,” “I’ve Had Enough” (which could be a radio hit in a less perfect world than which we live), and “All Hail the Weekend…” – nothing so serious as to turn blue over, waiting for the world to burn, but within this Jack O’ Lantern of a cast and crew there burns an intense maturity in the lyrics. “Local Resident Failure” and “War” serve as good examples until we approach something like “Sodom The Clown” (and where this came from is anyone’s guess, but it’s not funny!) and then “I Love Fucking Up” with its shimmy and shake good vibrations put to a square-circled lyrical rendition brought upon by ineptitude, distress and carelessness. Frenzal Rhomb, “greener” than Green Day, nearly a Ramones meets Offspring mix of pop-drenched speed-whacked fanaticism and subtle humor playfully skilled in the art of guilty pleasure and the musical equivalent to the next door neighbor’s kid with the shit-eating grin.
