Sewing With Nancie – Take a Look At Yourself – Review

Sewing With Nancie

Take a Look At Yourself (FastMusic)
by Scott Hefflon

Sewing with Nancie is a stupid band name, so let’s get that outta the way. They’re from Canada, where SNFU is considered a good band, and they seem to tour a lot with Ruth’s Hat (kind of a misleading bill, Sewing with Nancie and Ruth’s Hat, huh?), but Sewing with Nancie are into Screeching Weasel and Guttermouth (and there’s some McRackins in there too, for those who’ve heard of those Canucks), so I’ll cut ’em slack. And the 30-second “Starbucks Sucks” is a classic. (When’s the next Short Music for Short People out, anyway?) Fast as fuck, catchy and snotty like punk used to be before it got so freakin’ wholesome, but produced a little thin for these ears. Then again, people’ve sure complained enough about the “Fat sound” over the years, so maybe this honest-sounding slab’ll appeal to, uh, someone. It ain’t bad, but Ryan Greene’d streamline this sucker and the kids’d eat this up, dumb name or not. For punk fans who like nose-thumbing punkpop rampages like NOFX, Guttermouth, and maybe Honest Don’s-type stuff like Limp and Diesel Boy. (There’s an OK cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” which I think was on one of Wolverine’s Punk Chartbusters comps.)
