The 15 minutes for Squirrel Nut Zippers have come & gone. So it comes as little surprise that the first reaction to Asylum Street Spankers would be one of “been there, listened to that, sold my tux already.” But further inspection yields deeper results. Being a) from Austin, TX, and b) a band co-founded by resident big mouth/freak Wammo, My Favorite Record also has retro country thrown into the mix, not to mention lyrics much more up-to-date and tongue-in-cheek than the Zippers ever tried. The Spankers seem to know how to have fun, so the music isn’t so forced as some of the former’s later work. A fun record, if not the most vital piece of plastic in the world.
