Big D And The Kids Table – The Gipsy Hill EP – Review

Big D And The Kids Table

The Gipsy Hill EP (Fork In Hand)
by Scott Hefflon

I like ska punk about as much as a cold sore, but Big D And The Kid’s Table are fun and energetic and they hung in there long after ska punk became unfashionable, so ya gotta give ’em credit for sticking to what they believe in. Recorded at The Outpost in Stoughton with Jim Siegel, the bass sounds great, the horns clear and right up front, and while the singing alternates between shiny, snotty fake-Brit snarl like every shit punkpop posterboy band and yelpy The Bouncing Souls-style, fuck, that stuff has it’s place.

“Scenster” is funny, “What the Hell Are You Going to Do?” is a manic blast like classic Descendents (“I Like Food,” “ALL,” pick yer fave or collect them all!), and a few other moments come out bright and loud, goofy and fun, snotty and energetic. This EP (10 songs, which is long for an EP) closes with Jonathan Richmond’s “New England,” complete with “dum-de-dum-de-dum-dumde-dum-day”s.
