A blend of new wave, Goth, and electronica. Lead singer/songwriter Rogue’s voice comes across as inspired by the drones of Gary Numan with a hint of Peter Murphy.
Podstar’s melodies are – like all good emo-inspired pop-rock – achingly beautiful, but catchy enough to get stuck in your head all day and make you enjoy it.
It might be ok if, during any of the 12 songs, the guitars were in tune, the drums were on beat, or the singer was on pitch… ok, nevermind, it’s all bad.
Most folks know the monumental title track (the intro alone is classic), but there’re plenty of other worthwhile slabs of the band’s trademark grease-boogie.
They seem to share space with bands like Isis, who are more about creating tones and atmosphere ala Pink Floyd than writing verse-chorus-verse pop songs.
Nocturama generally follows the trends set on his last two albums (No More Shall We Part and The Boatman’s Call), in that they’re gentle and rich with nuance.
