If the aim is to lobotomize the audience, Things Viral is a success. As effective as Naked City’s Torture Garden at clearing your home of unwanted guests.
Ten songs (11 tracks, but one of ’em’s an intro), four of which are already available elsewhere. The greedy part of me wishes this album was all new stuff.
Pretty songs packed to the gills with hushed vocals, lightly-strummed guitars, understated strings, unintrusive synth blips, and light washes from the drumkit.
The whole thing is about under-achieving on the writing. Add to that a drum recording that sounds like milk 18 hours before it’s officially undrinkable.
I never thought Greg Dulli would take his tortured dementia into indielectro, and I never would’ve guessed that it would be as moving as Blackberry Belle.
Beyond the energy, prepare for lyrical shots like “the teaming masses want watered-down candy-coated/I want the real deal/cocked and ready/fully loaded.”
