by Scott Hefflon

Ex-X (that’s fun to write) member John Doe needs no introduction, nor does he need any soft-stepping. People have their sacred icons, and even when they falter and fail miserably, journalists and diehard fans will lie through their teeth, saying it’s great. This slab of blues and roots music needs no padding. Even the bad songs are decent, and when it goes there, it makes you stop what you’re doing to stare, slack-jawed in awe at how good music can be when you know what you’re doing. As punkers start to appreciate Johnny Cash and real-life roots music, this is bound to catch on and show how it can be done without the driving beat, big production, and all the yelling. Just as a bonus, cuz he can, guests include Neko Case, Grant Lee Phillips, and Throwing Muses’ Kristin Herst.
