Lost Patrol began as a solo endeavor for Dennis Lyzxén, current vocalist of The (International) Noise Conspiracy and former frontman of the legendary Refused. It was a vehicle for his mellower songs, enabling him to sing about personal matters instead of the usual political lambasting. A few albums and a severely broken heart later, Lost Patrol has become The Lost Patrol Band, and acoustic ditties have become power pop, early-’80s throwbacks. Proving that he can do more than scream ferociously, Lyxzén’s songs here are honest ta goodness catchy, without sounding rehashed (despite the style), and touching, without being sappy. Over bouncy tempos and pogoing power chords, he examines his loss, the prospect of moving on, and how to treasure the “Golden Times” (best song on the album). In the process, we’re treated to über fun rock that recalls Joan Jett and The Romantics. The tunes are carefree and effortless, channeling the innocence of first discovering music (or love, for that matter). At just under half an hour, it’s a blast of summertime liberty that’s bittersweet in all the right ways. Here’s to hoping there’s an upcoming tour!
