The Makers had a lot more mileage with me than they did their core fan base. When they dropped The Sonics for MC5, a lot of people got “bummed the fuck out.” I didn’t know them in the garage days, so when their first LP for Sub Pop, Rock Star God, came out, I was one of the handful of people in Seattle who would admit they liked it. The song “A Better Way Down” is the best song about committing suicide I’ve ever heard. “Just remember, try to look good and have fun with it. It’s the last cool thing you’ll ever do.” That whole LP is an inspired piece of rock and roll. This whole LP is not. I mean, it has its moments, but it continues on with the softer side they started to reveal with Strangest Parade. Which is where they started to lose me. Even when they seem set to kick out a jam, it comes off muted. They turned their backs on what they did for the first 10 years, and then they turned their backs on what made me like them. Maybe that’s honorable. One thing you can say about them is that they’re constantly evolving. Maybe I just don’t get it. Maybe in 10 years, this LP will be revolutionary, but today it’s sitting in the used bin.
