Kampfar – Kvass – Review

Kvass (Napalm)

Wow. This is one of the grungiest, catchiest black metal records I’ve heard in a while. Kampfar balance their Nordic metal roots with a heavy dose of pure hard rockin’ sludge, which is in some ways comparable to the death metal/hard rock hybrid of Entombed. It gives their music a hip-shaking swagger that balances well with the dark melodies and screeched vocals. It’s rock that rolls, ya know? All six cuts have a loose, jammy feel to them, making the whole thing sound very natural and human.

Since most of the lyrics aren’t in English, I’m not 100% sure what the dude is screeching about. Apparently, the band is way into Nordic folklore, which kind of makes sense. I mean, as far as black metal goes, their music is almost too groovy for Satan. But I’ll bet I could find a few slippies that’d creepy crawl to it.
