I Saw the Devil Last Night and Now the Sun Shines Bright (Victory)
by Scott Hefflon
I’m sure these guys are sick of being called quirky and eclectic, but they are, so they should get over it. It’s mostly too “look at us, aren’t we clever?” for me, but when they “stick to the rock,” they’re quirkily weird and fun anyway, so I really wish they’re stop trying so freakin’ hard. “Insane and Speechless” is a great song with nothing more to prove. Seeing as The Mars Volta and most bands on the GSL label can wank away and people don’t just get up and leave, perhaps fans want “smart rock” in their collection, despite the hipster pretentiousness of most of it, and that’s fine, but they sure have no sense of humor about how overrated their heroes are. Closer “Satan Has A Heart of Gold” is pleasant as well, but “ironic” and “clever” and unnecessarily long titles bug me. If you’re looking for a Flaming Lips tribute band, consider your search over.
