Metalcore stalwarts As I Lay Dying can make good, but maybe not great, melodic metal in their sleep, so sometimes their catalog feels a little clogged with solid rather than stellar stuff. “Cauterize,” a lean, mean track from their latest album, Awakened, though, is a cut above, and a perfect encapsulation of their talents.
