Amon Amarth are the AC/DC of Viking death metal. They found and perfected a style, and they rarely deviate from it. They’ve got nine or so albums to their credit, we’ve reviewed every one, I believe, and they’re all solid. “Father of the Wolf” is a fine example of the meat’n’potatoes metal the band offers (growling vocals, chugging riffs, a harmonized melodic solo and a bit of soloing dancing above the darkened riff from mid-point to close), all pretty predictable and reliably good. With Deceiver of the Gods, like most Amon Amarth albums, there are treasures within, a jaw-dropping solo, some blastbeats to break up all the mid-tempo “metal dood strutting through the mall” vibe and Maiden gallops galore. Always worth a listen, usually worth a purchase, Amon Amarth don’t break into new and exciting realms of metal, but they have yet to disappoint.
