Dan from Downingtown’s “Let You Go” is a torch song for the new age. I don’t know about this guy’s earnest voice (but I like weird voices) or even his lyrics, which are kinda trite. He also has this schtick where he blocks out his eyes in vids and photos. Whatever. The tune is a slow builder, featuring that earnest, kid-like voice over a single bass string, then spare drums and cymbal crashes, some artificial sounds — including rat-a-tat-tat percussion — before the alt-rock chorus bails him out. It’s big and resounding, again with the cymbals and loud, confident chords. Something makes you wish the arraignment featured it earlier. Whoa oh oh oh, whoa oh oh oh. He’s young. He’s learning. Yet there is a charming naivete on display. Maybe that’s what makes it effective? Make up your mind, Scott.
