Holy Roller Baby
“Speaking In Tongues”

Holy Roller Baby play Southern-tinged, ’70s-type rock with an interesting sense of dynamics and educated guitar, at least they do on “Speaking In Tongues.” A little out-of-scope for the band, the tune features hairy singer and guitarist (and only permanent member) Jared Mullins sounding a bit like Jakob Dylan, his heart-wrenching falsetto coming off as sincere. The group, which blends boogie and blues on other tracks, will likely always be hit-or-miss with me. Mullins’ classic rock and look — especially his look — remind me of J. Roddy Walston and the Business (lots of Js in this review). You can also throw Bob Seger in there for the voice. Whatever, “Speaking In Tongues,” Harry Nilsson-with-guitars-by-way-of-Badfinger reminiscent, is pretty good rock.
