Somewhere between new wave revival, dreamy pop, and danceable beats is where you’ll find A Violet in Youth’s “Desert Roll.” You can throw in some noticeable bass, piano, synths, and, especially, angular guitar — whatever that is, and here the instrument is somewhat reminiscent of Charm School’s Debt Forever, kinda choice. Daniella Lollie’s Aimee Mann-by-way-of-Violet-Clark-but-a-tad-higher vocals are spare throughout (though she also sings in a lower register on the single’s flipside, the more subdued “Exactly”). Interesting mélange. Rock, rock, till ya drop.
