Talk about truth in advertising. I’ve been disappointed in much of Starflyer 59’s music since 2008’s Dial M. Leader Jason Martin has produced some worthy songs since then, but much of his output has been lacking, with some of it moving at a snail’s pace. Here, the erstwhile shoegazer is back with a punkier, louder tune that borrows from the Ramones’ “Chinese Rock” and “This Ain’t Havana” (the riff of the former, the echoed ending of the latter; both songs appear on 1980’s End of the Century. If Martin didn’t at least subconsciously recall the record when writing this number, I’d be surprised). But it’s Martin’s own studied beast, a purposely messier cousin to the straight-ahead rocking of the underrated I Am the Portuguese Blues. The chorus is reminiscent of previous work, and it’s one of the faster songs he’s penned. There are also some post-punk and noise rock guitar stabs in the crowded soup. The aging rocker is still on a downer, but he’s tuneful about it. And applause goes to his son Charlie for some pretty ferocious drumming. The Disappointed EP drops on the last day of July.
