Denmark’s Iceage started out aping Brit punk and post-punk, meshing it with old school hardcore. They were loud, messy, and somewhat fun, with singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt sounding like Robert Smith and, to a lesser extent, Joe Strummer. Then they got experimental and made some pretty damn unlistenable records, and this leads us to “The Weak,” the third single from sixth album For Love of Grace & the Hereafter, which fuses garage punk, rockabilly, and handclaps. Think of the Supersuckers’ “Born With a Tail” spliced with The Heartbreakers’ L.A.M.F., plus a middle eight featuring the flute. Rønnenfelt’s vocals are an acquired taste: he went from try-too-hard to wimpy emo, but here he hits as sweet a spot as he’s likely to find. The lyrics are cynical, but despite their caustic nature, the song is catchy enough to be used on a commercial selling cars, soap, or smartphones. “The Weak” is miles better than most of the crap the band’s released since its sophomore album.
