Memory
Pfff
by Scott Deckman
In the rock world, being from Athens brings a certain cachet, mainly visions of R.E.M., the B-52s, and other under-the-radar ’80s acts which sprang from that Peach State scene. Memory hails from Athens, too, but the one in Greece, and their EP Pfff, while not the stuff of Socrates or Plato, does speaketh “loud, mathy alt-rock.” In fact, some of Pfff could be classified as mathcore without the stupid screams (remember when there was only hardcore?). But hey, I see a Jazzmaster, so who knows? Call it whatever you want, but the band plays heavy riffs mixed with changing and complex time signatures. It’s like Memory’s playlist is equal parts Dillinger Escape Plan and the Sex Pistols, with a dash of Rush thrown in. It makes for some interesting music.
Titular song “Pfff” is fast, aggressive, and punky, with singer/guitarist Pano crooning he doesn’t know where he belongs and “nothing is working.” (He sings in English quite well.) “Impulse Act” is full of twists and turns, living up to its name; the tune also features a melodramatic ’70-like riff among the other heavy guitar parts and blistering time signature changes. The song may be too busy for its own good. Mathcore nerds might like it, though. It also must be said that drummer Myrwn has especially educated hands. This band could have a following and career if it’s not careful.
