Lobby Magnets – Review

Lobby Magnets

by Scott Hefflon

Lobby Magnets‘ demo is out. Actually, they have, like, six semi-demos out, but I hope they’ll stick with this one for a while. We “conducted an interview” for the page after the center spread last issue. Again, not a bad slot. These guys have that toss-your-head-from-side-to-side energy. What they lack in that flashily progressive “look how great I play” department, they more than compensate for with catchy hooks and over all FUN. Not that they aren’t good (“Bundy” is an immense, fun-loving bear and the last thing I want to do is piss him off!). They just seem to prioritize beer over “The Biz.” I heard a comment about playing anytime, anywhere for the bar tab, but for those of you who recall a similar scene in Blues Brothers, you know where that can lead. The four-song demo has quite the package (as we tried to convey in the last issue, but the printer mangled the artwork), and the music itself is a testament to true rock ‘n’ roll.

A hint and a plug: catch Velvet Voodoo Dolls and Lobby Magnets at the Kirkland Cafe @ Harvard Sq., Cambridge on September 10th for the first official Lollipop party. There’ll be demos, shirts, and lots of booze. The setting is cozy, the tunes are great, but while the prices are cheap, drinks are not on the house.
