Drill – Review

Drill

(A&M)
by Scott Hefflon

This is an amazing release scheduled to come out in early 1996. While details are sketchy, faith in Drill‘s potential is not. The foundation of Dan Harnett’s lucid guitarwork, blending seamlessly from simple strumming to choppy, angry riffs, provides a broad platform for the freshest voice in some time, courtesy of Lucia. She’s so innovative she doesn’t even need a last name. Not since Four Non Blondes have I been so moved by such a novel vocal style. Her lung strength is impressive; her bubblegum cute whisper turns into a tormented croak that’d make Trent proud, and the haywire vibrato of her screech must be heard to be believed. Look out, Diamanda Galas!
