Mile Wide – Review

Mile Wide

by Lex Marburger

I’ve been waiting for this CD for what seems like years now. Mile Wide has long been my favorite Boston band (you can hear me spout off in previous issues) and I had thought, much to my dismay, that they would only have one tape to their name before going supernova, as these kind of bands tend to do. Huzzah! The CD seems to be a supercharged version the tape, and it’s special. It’s an organic entity at the edge of sleep, twisting and shaping sounds like a grittier Can, strange shapes floating in the distance. Is it somehow ethnic? Avant-garde? Sloppy? Mile Wide includes a Sarangi, Cello, and Clarinet in their musical mix, that much I can tell you, and the CD lets the sounds come through more accurately, seizing the grooves and clarifying them. Him who has ears, let him understand.
