Underflowers – Review

Underflowers

(Bedazzled)
by Rich Romaine

Trust Bedazzled to uncover another melancholy beauty. As the Goth genre splits wider and the battlelines are drawn between Marilyn Manson’s cock-rock Alice Cooperisms and the ethereal wisps of dreamy pop, the semantics of description and comparison become convoluted. Underflowers lean toward the subtle, swaying strains of Dead Can Dance – especially with the rich, male voice of J. Orazi contrasting the gossamer vocals of Mia Chesta. Flute, violin, and tinklings add to the reverb-soaked guitars as much as the lack of percussion does. Without keyboards, sampled sounds, or drum machines, the sound remains purely organic and soothingly digestible.
