Rollerderby – The Book – Review

Rollerderby

by Lisa Crystal Carver (Feral House)
by William Ham

Lisa (Suckdog) Carver’s Rollerderby is the ‘zine that Sassy wishes it were – the work of a feminist who still enjoys being a girl. Since its inception in 1990, it’s navigated a letter-perfect course between the shoals of operatic sleaze she’s best known (in certain vicious circles) for and the gooey lowlands of cutesiness. Would anyone else have asked the then-incarcerated-but-still-living GG Allin if he missed flowers and babies? Talked to Lydia Lunch, Kim Gordon and Courtney Love about… clothes? Laid criticism on Linda Evangelista’s haircut alongside diagrams of how to give the perfect blowjob? No one but our Lisa, kids ‘n’ kitties.

If you foolishly missed the scatological loveliness the first time around, now’s your chance to redress your crass mistake. Rollerderby (The Book) compiles nearly everything that’s appeared in its first sixteen issues, with intermittent updates, corrections, and clarifications from the editrix herself, providing concrete evidence that this whole ‘zine thing has purpose and meaning after all, if only to give this one sex kitty something to sharpen her claws on while purring with malicious contentment. Fuck Generation X once and for all – sign me up for Generation L.
