Far – Water and Solutions – Review

Far

Water and Solutions (Immortal/Epic)
by Tim Den

The second major label offering from these unsung heroes of Sacramento is gritty, rich, and so emotionally challenging that even the most hooded-sweatshirt-pit dominator will shed tears upon listening. And I’m not talking about just plain old tears here: I’m talking about big-ass insecurity tears, memories-of-broken-heart tears, inner-demon tears, and tears from all the other feelings you’ve hidden from yourself for so long. Right from the opener, “Bury White,” vocalist Jonah Sonz Matranga whispers comforting melodies like a caring mother, then shatters your childish defenses as he screams out your fears in a sudden burst of musical spasm.

Balancing tame yet passionate music with fascinating and daring vocals, wave upon wave of soaring notes convince you that music has never been executed so well. From quiet, emo-styled numbers to flat out guitar-driven crunchers, Far takes their songs beyond the imagination of heavy music. There’re enough stop-and-go rhythms to keep your dancing feet satisfied, but never at the cost of the textured songwriting. String arrangements, eerie organs, and distorted finger pianos add special touches to the compositions, making this hard-to-categorize band the best thing out there. I suggest all the tough guys and mohawkians shed their looks at the door, grab a taste of Far, and have a group hug.
