The Dawning of Pure Evil – Review

The Dawning of Pure Evil

Five Years of Necropolis Records (Necropolis)
by Scott Hefflon

As much as I often poke fun at Necropolis for buying into the whole metal schtick a bit too much (every sentence ends with a slammer! It’s War! Blasphemy! Chaos! Evil! Evil! and similar mouth-foamings, not to mention you can’t read any of the bands cryptically-scrawled logos, and most of the band members have names like Snaggletooth, Bloodsucker, and comic book shit like that), that doesn’t mean I don’t like the music they release. While “messier” than many of the other US freakmetal labels, Necropolis probably captures more chaos per ticking second than any other. At over 70 minutes, you can’t help but get yer money’s worth of galloping ’80s thrash shred, hyperspeed pummeling, throat-ripping shrieks, guttural growls, and trance-inducing nightmare blurs of sound. Making their demonic presence known are Dawn, Guillotine, Nifelheim, The Ancients Rebirth, Witchery, Sadistic Intent, Demonic, Ophthalamia, Dissection, War, Cranium, Deathwitch, Tartaros, Usurper, Arckanum, Satanic Slaughter, Niden Div. 187, Ashes, and Vondur.
