Swirlies – Strictly East Coast Sneaky Flute Music – Review

Swirlies

Strictly East Coast Sneaky Flute Music (Taang!)

Gee, I wish I knew more about the Swirlies. That’s a horrible way to start a review, as it shows that I’m a bad reviewer (no donut). But hey, I wasn’t hired because I knew anything about so-called “college radio masters.” However, whoever they are, they certainly run with people I do know, namely DJ Spooky, DJ Soulslinger, and Reese N20, to name a few. These mixmasters apparently took some tracks from the Swirlies and chopped ’em, processed ’em, and put ’em back together. I think. Because I don’t really know what the Swirlies actually do (although I have a few ideas, like chug away on guitars into crappy tape recorders), I can’t tell what the DJs did, either. But that doesn’t really matter, because the end product is really cool. Some of Strictly East Coast Sneaky Flute Music freaks out in a wild mess of beats and distorted snippets, some lays back and rides an easy groove. At least it’s something new. Next stop: Chemical Brothers remix Sonic Youth’s Sonic Death.
