Swingin’ Utters – The Sounds Wrong EP – Review

Swingin’ Utters

The Sounds Wrong EP (Fat)
by Chris Best

This EP was originally released on IFA records in 1995. Though the Swingin’ Utters have never put out anything but great music, Sounds Wrong stands out as having one of my favorite SU songs on it. If there ever was such a thing as a street punk epic tune, “Dirty Sea” is it. The great thing about the Swingin’ Utters is that you can do just about anything while listening to them. They’re good to drive long distances to, a joyful noise for your good times, or a soundtrack to lighten the mood at your shitty job. They’re great for sex, making out, being depressed, drinking and being depressed, drunk and crying and depressed – dammit, these guys are just great.

This is a great alternate version of their sound around the same time as Streets Of San Francisco. I can understand how these fit together and wouldn’t have made it onto the album. Where Streets… was their ball of fury, these songs were some of their more soulful tunes, like their other early EPs. If you love the Swingin’ Utters and don’t yet have this, you must get it now.
