The Gamits – This Is My Boomstick – Review

The Gamits

This Is My Boomstick (To The Left)
by Scott Hefflon

The Gamits had the lead-off track on Bakamono’s sampler, a cover of ABBA’s “Take a Chance” (the closing track here), a cover I absolutely love. And while the songs on this EP are good, catchy, and showcase an up-and-coming pop-punk band, the production is flat and the hooks aren’t as sharp and polished as the cover. Sure, ABBA wrote the song, but the way The Gamits covered it shows they have a solid understanding of melody, layering, and quite a sense of humor. While nothing here quite compares, this debut does offer hints of clever, not over-used melodic twists and song structure. While not fully fleshed out, this is where it begins. Watch for a full-length coming out on Suburban Home later this year.
