Hot for Remixes – A Tribute to Van Halen – Review

Hot for Remixes

A Tribute to Van Halen (Deadline)
by Martin Popoff

Another twisted Deadline ploy, here’s one from their Metal vs. Electronica series (with at least the Gunners and Zeppelin getting the enraging carve), Hot For Remixes offering full-on techno versions of Halen’s greatest blood-grain alcohollers. At least the label slaps on a famous second-string hair vocalist to each abortion, “Dance The Night Away” finding Kevin Dubrow creating the sound of one hand clapping, and the Bullet Boys’ Marq Torien eking out a living (it’s a struggle) on “Feel Your Love Tonight.” Lowest low: Gilby Clarkes‘s “Ice Cream Man,” not sure what key that’s supposed to be in, but I’m locked out of all caring. Bottom line: this is a shotgun marriage of two worlds who will never understand each other.

Ingredients include Jack Russell, Dweezil Zappa, Pretty Boy Floyd, Jeff Scott Soto, Stephen Pearcy, David Glen Eissly, John Corabi, Bruce Kulick, Fizzy Bangers, L.A. Guns, Kelly Hanson, Bang Tango, and Silver Jet; remixes by KMFDM, Razed in Black, Sheep on Drugs, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, The Electric Hellfire Club, Nitzer Ebb, Astralasia, Spahn Ranch, Naked Lunch, PIG, Rosetta Stone, Intra-Venus, Pigface, and Interface.
