98 Mute – Slow Motion Riot – Review

98 Mute

Slow Motion Riot (Epitaph)
by Scott Hefflon

Many people like 98 Mute. Unfortunately, I’m not one of them. While they’re from Hermosa Beach, home to Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Descendents (yes, and Pennywise, as the bio points out, seeing as they got their start on Pennywise’s Theologian Records as well as their production and probably their push), they sure as shit ain’t on par with those greats. Not many are. 98 Mute aren’t bad, they just are no different from a couple hundred other punk bands who aren’t bad. They have no distinctive sound or style, and they max out the same clichés as every other mediocre hardcore/punk band. But hey, if you like these guys, here’s a new 45-minute CD with 15 new instantly-forgettable songs!
