Slick Shoes – Cooter – Split – Review

Slick Shoes/Cooter

Split (Fueled By Ramen)
by Scott Hefflon

Four songs each on this split, each sounding noisier than usual, and that’s a good thing. Slick Shoes appear courtesy of Tooth & Nail and usually pound away at their manic God-punk with Ryan Greene-sounding production, but here they slow down a touch (still fast tho’) and the fourth track is an impromptu fuck-around with drum machine, sampling, flutes, and funky guitar and bass, and playful scat/rapping. Cooter is yelping melodic punk, and they throw in some nice’n’nasty chords (probably emo or something) but they never stray far from the peppy, heartfelt, Bouncing Souls-style vocals they’ve displayed on FastMusic. The production is what really makes the difference on these four songs.
