The Flaming Sideburns – The Hellacopters – White Trash Soul- Review

The Flaming Sideburns

White Trash Soul (Bad Afro)
by Scott Hefflon

This here’s a lotta rock crammed into 20 dangerous minutes! By now, it’s probably pretty obvious that The Hellacopters rock yer AC/DC-lovin’ ass, and even if you prefer the specific sparkle of other gems to this, hell, at least ya know the heft and how to smash posers’ heads in with it. With a new record coming out on Universal (that means there’s money to be made, and maybe the ‘Copters’ll be the first to crossover to the mainstream, seeing as lugheads like Buckcherry seem to’ve forgotten to reach back and help out their friends when they won the lottery to get the push), many of us are waiting to see how people react to the sweat, the stink, and the primal thrust of real rock’n’roll.

Sounding much less hard rock/metal than Payin’ the Dues, the ‘Copters cover two Smokey Robinson tunes – “Whole Lot of Shakin’ In My Heart (Since I Met You)” and “Get Ready” – and The Flaming Sideburns’ “Ungrounded Confusion.” The Flaming Sideburns similarly finish their three-song set with a Hellacopters cover, “Psyched Out and Furious.” As you might expect from the title, this sucker’s more based on garage fumes and soulful wailing and tones than in monsters of rock wall-of-guitar, so while there’s still gonzo soloing galore, it’s more Chuck Berry than Angus Young this time out. With lots of duck-walkin’, waist-twistin’, and electric piano-bangin’, White Trash Soul is a six-shooter of shakin’ you oughtta track down.
