Even with only five songs, Starflyer 59 can take you on a transcendental (Californian) pop trip like no other. This band has really perfected its Pet Sounds-like power: Simple yet effective melodies, echoy guitar licks calling out like phantoms on ghost ships. Jason Martin’s vocals are as hushed and delicate as ever, telling you very bad things with sweet whispers (that’s a Tom Waits sayin’). I just can’t get enough. When’s the new album, fellas?
