Defiance displays the reasons for Assemblage 23‘s rapidly growing success. “Opened” is hands-down my favorite track. The song emits energy and kicks the album off, luring you in. While Assemblage 23 projects the image of high energy and fast-paced music, the songs “Cocoon” and “Lullaby” offer a break, clocking in at well under 100 bpm, where the average song is 120-130 bpm. “Document,” the single, proves a worthy choice, representative of the album. “Light” is epic-sounding, meshing hard techno beats with the best elements of modern-day synthpop. In the end, a solid album that moves along smoothly.
