Reality on a Finer Scale (Propain)
by Scott Hefflon

Female-fronted cybermetal groove. Breathy and sexy, then howling like a fuckin’ banshee. Vocals are way upfront. But she sounds hot, so she can be as upfront as she wants to be. Some nice melodies tucked in there, some powerful choruses, and bottom-heavy guitars chug away. Kinda strange… New band syndrome, perhaps, because for all their thunder and thrust, they miss a ton of opportunities. Rianna can sing well, but she repeats the same notes a whole lot when here or there she could offer up some harmonizing instead of the same exact notes she just sang. She’s got the lungs for almost anything. Ditto with guitarwork. It pounds away, but there’s no riff of the year to be found. It’s just chugging power back-up. Of note, the howling rockers are front-loaded, the back end is all ballads. Not like metal power ballads, I mean huge empty spaces, with a delicate sigh every so often, and a breath and a whisper…
