Orange Canyon Mind (Crucial Blast)
by Scott Hefflon

20 years of making “lumbering abstraction” and “freeform, bass-heavy, feedback-driven improv noise rock.” This stuff can be glorious, like time lapse photography of a flower opening, or it can sound like leaving the vacuum on in the next room. I’m no specialist here, not by a long shot, but I have two or three CDs like this (Pelican and Strapping Young Lad’s Devin Townsend’s Ocean Machine project, I think it is, and both are still more “song-based.” Oh, and the score to Dead Man by Neil Young), and I have no need for more. Find someone into this stuff, ask for a recommendation for a casual fan, buy one hand-picked CD, and get on with life.
