Immortality Through Ashes (Tragic End)
By Ari M. Joffe

Former A.T.W. frontman, Ray Terry, dispenses with the punk rock of his former project and jumps into the sludge with his new power trio, Nightbreed. For those familiar with the grungy, revved-up, Misfits-inspired attack of A.T.W. (a.k.a. Allergic To Whores), Nightbreed’s slower tempos might take a second to get used to. But trust me, Immortality Through Ashes is definitely an EP that grows on you. The six tunes display a moody doom style revolving around Eric Mzik’s melodic bass lines, Adam Walter’s propulsive drums, and Terry’s catchy, down-tuned guitar riffs. The songs build tension by starting off rather angular, with each instrument in its own hemisphere, and slowly conforming to the main, blasting riff. It’s an old trick, but hey, they work it well. And, as always, Terry’s distinctive rasp fits perfectly with the ebb and flow of the music. Can’t wait for the full length!
