This Won’t Hurt… (Red Scare)

It’s simply mind-boggling how many sugary-sweet pop punk tunes Dan Schafer (aka Dan Vapid) has penned or played. From his longtime involvement in Screeching Weasel to the short-lived but very enjoyable Riverdales releases to his now-full-time band, The Methadones, the guy must have sugar water for blood. While SW and The Queers went through some raw and angry patches (can’t forget the punk part of pop punk), and bands like Lagwagon and Green Day have pursued acoustic styles, The Methadones simply churn out catchy, sweet 4/4, three-or-four-chord pop punk. While that might sound stagnant (not to mention dated), man, ya sure don’t mind while the CD’s playing.
