“Tower of Silence”
The Last Spire (Metal Blade Records)
release date: 4/30/2013
by Scott Hefflon
The near seven-minute “Tower of Silence” closes Cathedral’s 20+ year run as doom giants, The Last Spire being their last album of new recordings (start the tally of rarity releases, alternative versions, live recordings, and all that). No Hammond, Moog, synth, or mellotron here, this track is straight-served guitar trudge, all fuzzed riffs and sharpened-blade soloing. Some nice drum fills keep the lethargic pace from putting listeners to sleep, but vocalist Lee Dorrian doesn’t help matters much, repeating the same dark melody, sometimes delayed, delayed, delayed, with very little variation. A return to roots, no meandering proggy experimentation, just doom. As it began, so it ends.
