Pixies 2.0 has been a bit disappointing, with mostly patchy records and a feeling that, “Well, maybe you should wait a bit more and put the goods on a couple albums.” But one thing hasn’t changed though, and that’s Frank Black Francis can still write a weird, affecting tune. Almost-title track “(Jane) The Night the Zombies Came” is a little simpatico with his songs that sound a bit like fairytales or harken back to ye olden days (Show Me Your Tears’ “Manitoba”), or ones imbued with lushness (Doggerel’s “You’re Such a Sadducee” and “Who’s More Sorry Now?”). It’s a slow, measured ditty that features a simple, memorable guitar line, nice background vocals courtesy of new bassist Emma Richardson, and some other synth/computerized stuff (I think). And FBF’s voice is right in front of it all. It’s folky, ethereal, and probably the best offering from new record, The Night the Zombies Came.
