MRC – META/Morph – Review

MRC

META/Morph (Young American)
by Scott Hefflon

Combining high resolution graphics and claymation-esque paintings is the visual. Musically, MRC (pronounced “Mercy”) leaps between standard rock (embellished with various effects) and space age ambience. “Looped” sounds like a single to me. Soulful vocals, pseudo-horns and funk rock paces give this song a Fishbone/Faith No More feel, with a touch of Zappa thrown in gratuitously. Establish no preconception. Make comparisons that make no sense. Finally peg a song and it morphs into something else. “Incubus” is pleasantly deranged, yet catchy enough to fit within the confines of the word “song.” Ditto with “Psychic Sidekick,” a great rock ‘n’ roll title. The song bleeds heavy guitars, rock melodies, and weird sounds tossed in liberally. And finally, “Ayahuasca” sounds like Michael Bolton doing a ballad to the cosmos. Rich baritone vocals, whooshing planets, languid orchestration, dramatic swells that soar, quiet moments of reverie – yup, it’s moving.
