Mystery Machine – 10 Speed – Review

Mystery Machine

10 Speed (Nettwerk)
by Dana Buoniconti

This Canadian foursome has made a fairly decent album considering the majority of the songs sound the same. At times reminiscent of Hüsker Dü (the band’s heroes) and Sonic Youth, Mystery Machine invites the listener in with thick, warm guitars – a welcome change from the usual beat-you-senseless approach. As a result, 10 Speed has a strangely calming effect. Worth a listen, though a broader palette would go a long way. Points for naming themselves after the van on Scooby Doo.
