Sound Waves

Vol. 6 #12 (30 Shawondasee Dr. Stoningham, CT 06378)
by Chaz Thorndike

If you think your hometown’s scene is the most dismal on the planet, try reading Sound Waves. And I stress the word try. Any ‘zine, even a free-be piece of shit you pick up for the club listings ’cause you’re too cheap to buy a real paper, ought to have a bit of text that’s interesting to read, a photo of someone you’d like to see a photo of, or a club listing with a band name you actually recognize. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t consider a feature story about Pantera one that opens with the line “Heavy metal music is a selective taste,” before delving deep into the complexities of metalhead mentality. I’m kidding. There’s nothing in this “feature” that hasn’t been said better elsewhere, with more detail, fewer trite attempts at social commentary, and fewer typos. Having been unfortunate enough to have lived in Connecticut, I understand that Karaoke bars are considered quality entertainment, and not hush-hush experiments in tastelessness to be experienced while wearing a large trenchcoat, dark glasses, and a broad-brimmed hat (not to mention earplugs). I wonder if Fizz would accept a submission called “My State Sucks,” in place of their regularly scheduled “My Town Sucks” column. Just a thought.
