Cephalic Carnage – Exploiting Dysfunction – Review

Cephalic Carnage

Exploiting Dysfunction (Relapse)
by Tim Den

This shit’s carnage, alright. I’d given up hope on humorous grindcore played well until I played this here disc. Imagine Mr. Bungle, Candiria, Pink Floyd, Acid Bath, and something like Impulse Manslaughter all together and you’ve got Exploiting Dysfunction. Oh yes, and let’s not forget the random video game noises, Joe Pesci movie samples, and a “thank you” list done in grindcore style. I don’t know whether to laugh or completely lose my mind over this. I think Cephalic Carnage is looking for both. As crushing and heavy as it is unpredictable, this band is carrying on the legacy left behind by early ’90s jazz-fusion death metallers Atheist (although in a more brutal and random direction) creating post-modern head-splitting noise. They must’ve crammed a whole lifetime’s worth of circus shows into their grindcore listening habits (the song titles alone are worth the price of the disc. “Warm Hand on a Cold Night (a Tale of Onesomes),” “Molestando Plantas Muertos!” [an obvious take-off of Brujeria’s “Molestando Ninos Muertos”], etc.).
