Welcome to Carcass Cuntry (Fractured Transmitter)

Yup, this is it: Ex-Carcass bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker‘s “solo” “country” album. What, you thought he was bluffing? If you’re familiar with the quick-witted, cheeky frontman, you know not to question him. Okay, so it’s not Randy Travis, but it’s still a helluva good time. Can you imagine how much these guys drank and fucked around as they turned country classics into punk and metal ditties? Hank Williams, Kris Kristofferson, The Byrds, John Denver, Johnny Cash, no legend is spared from Walker *Und Die Flüffers*. It helps that the cast here includes Billy Gould (ex-Faith No More), Shane Embury (Napalm Death), almost all of Amorphis/Anathema/H.I.M., Nicke Andersson (The Hellacopters, ex-Entombed), dudes from Fintroll, as well as ex-Carcass compadres Bill Steer and Ken Owen. Fuckin’ Christ, just look at that list! Enough to choke the best death metal all-star team.

The music is, as mentioned earlier, free-spirited and full of give-no-shit interpretation. One gets the feeling that Walker and co. were after good times when they tackled these, as blast beats explode in the middle of “I Just Dropped in (to See What Condition My Condition Was In)” and “Keep on Rocking in the Free World” gets nice and heavily detuned. The man himself tries some clean vocals on “Rocky Mountain High,” a feat not terribly unenjoyable, but certainly nothing to write home about. But hey, you just listened to Jeff Walker – of Carcass, of Birmingham, England upbringing – croon about Colorado in a high-pitched wail. Um, I’d say you got your money’s worth.

This one’s not for the diehard, but rather the lighthearted who can appreciate the humor and approach of one of death/grind’s most colorful characters.
