Voodoo Glow Skulls
Steady as She Goes (Victory)
by Scott Hefflon
After four records for Epitaph, Voodoo Glow Skulls find a home on Victory and release their first self-produced album. While ska punk has long since died, the pirates of VGS are one of the very, very few to make it out alive, and with good reason. They’re a solid band, they work hard and maintain their core following, and they cover both ends of the spectrum: A dark side and a sense of humor. While most ska bands sported snappy outfits and jumped around looking silly, VGS kept it streetside. They may have that manic up-stroke guitar style that drives ya nuts, and the singer sure does sing that one note a lot, but it sounds great blasting out the window during a backyard party, and that counts for something.
